Ucchusama Vidyaraja’s Great Perfection Dharani Effective Magic
跡金剛說神通大滿陀羅尼法術靈要門一卷 

北天竺國三藏沙門阿質達霰唐言無能勝將譯

As I heard, at one time the Buddha was in between the Sal-tree (娑羅雙樹), at Nairanjana River (跋提河) bank in Kuśi-nagara (拘尸那國), mallānām upavartanam (力士生處). At that time the Buddha was entering nirvana. At that time there were uncountable hundred thousand millions of naga, deva and eight division beings (天龍八部), human and non-human weeping sadly and troubled.

At that time, there were also various Śakro-devānāmindra (Sky-god/釋提桓因) etc. came and make offerings except the Cabalash Bun Brahma (蠡髻梵王) was sitting in the center of billions of devi (天女). They were entertaining amongst themselves. Although they heard that the Buddha is entering nirvana, none of them have any intention to visit the Buddha.

The congregation then said:

“Now the Buddha is entering nirvana, why is it that Brahma still did not come? The king must be very ātma-māna (arrogant/我慢) so that he refused to come here. We shall deploy minor magicians (小呪仙) to arrest him.”

After the words are said, then hundred thousands of magicians were dispatched to Brahma’s place. Sadly all the magicians were trapped and destroyed by breaking spell taboo (犯呪) after viewing various unholy items (種種不淨). At that time, the congregation felt very strange as they have not experienced this type of incident. So, they again dispatched unlimited number of vajra (金剛). But again the vajra were all being sent off by Brahman’s mantra. No one was successful in summoning Brahman after 7 days.

When the congregation saw this hopeless situation, they became sadder. So the congregation said simultaneously the below katha (偈言):

苦哉大聖尊  
It is so sorrowful, oh great holy one!

入真何太速
Why have you entering nirvana so fast?

諸天猶決定
The gods are still undecisive;

天人追喚得
Both gods and human are crying out loud.

痛哉天中天
Our sorrows have reached the highest of the heavens;

入真如火滅
The Buddha are entering nirvana as if the extinguishing of fire!

After the congregation has mentioned the above katha, they again wept out loud sorrowfully. At that time, the Buddha pity the congregation, so he used his ever encompassing magical power and emitted an indestructible vajra from his left heart. The vajra rose from the seat amongst the congregation. The vajra said to the congregation:

“I have mantra of great magical power that can arrest Brahma.”

After saying the words, the vajra shown his great magical power amongst the congregation and this has caused this tri-sahasra-mahā-sahasra-loka-dhātu (universe/三千大千世界) to quake 6 times. All devapura (palace/天宮), nagapura, palace of spirits etc. were all being destroyed. Then, the vajra rose in the air and travelled to Brahma’s place. He used his finger to point at the unholy items and all of them transformed into the earth.

At that time the vajra speak to Brahma:

“It is because of your stupidity that when my Buddha is entering nirvana; you refused to visit.”

The vajra immediately used his indestructible vajra power point at Brahma lightly and Brahma vowed to come to Buddha’s place.

At that time, the congregation praised at the vajra:

“Balavān puruṣaḥ (Hercules/大力士), indeed you have great magical power to bring Brahma to this place.”

The vajra immediately replied:

“If there are any sentient beings annoyed by various devatas, demons, heretics (外道) etc and if they recites my mantra for 100,000 times; then I shall show myself and fulfill wishes of all sentient beings. I shall make them leave poverty and they shall be in peace and happy always. The method to recite the mantra is that one should first make a great vow and seek refuge to the root guru, Sakya-munis tathagatah (南無我本師釋迦牟尼佛). If one recites this mantra after the Buddha has entered into nirvana and that he/she vows to deliver all sentient beings so that the Buddhadharma (佛法) can be transmitted continuously.”

After the vajra has spoken the vow, he continued to speak of the great perfection dharnani mantra (大圓滿陀羅尼神呪):

The Ucchusama mantra (穢跡真言):

om bhur kum maha pranaye burci burki bimanase ucusma maha kroda hum hum phat phat phat  svaha

When the vajra has completed mentioning the mantra, he further said:

“I shall always recite this mantra after the Buddha has achieved nirvana. If there are any sentient beings who wish to recite this mantra, then I shall dispatch my messengers to fulfill their wishes. I shall now speak of this mantra in front of the Buddha. It is my hope that the Buddha watch over us in his nirvana state.

Blessed One, if there are sentient beings disturbed by evil spirits; they shall not be harmed if they recite this mantra. And that the ones who recite this mantra shall be devoid of difficulties and disasters.

Blessed One, if virtuous men and women who wish to help to cure all kind of illnesses, then they should recite the above mantra for 400,000 times. Then they shall be able to treat any kind of illnesses effectively. Regardless if it is clean or unclean that I shall be willing to serve them; and that I shall follow them and fulfill all their wishes.

If one wish to revive a withered tree then get one full Tael (大兩) of sarja-rasa (白膠香) and rub it against the center of the tree. And by holding a willow twig and recite mantra for 100 times. He/she should perform the ritual 3 times a day for 3 days. After that the withered tree shall flower and bear fruits.

If one wishes to produce water from a dried spring then he/she should get some clean ash and spread it around the well. Then he/she should get three bucket of well water collected after midnight (井華水) and pour the water into the spring. After that the person should recite mantra for 108 times between 3am to 5am then the spring water will gush out as if car wheel.

If one wishes to make a barren hill cover with vegetation then he/she should use a wrought iron knife (鑌鐵刀) and draws a circle encircling the hill. Further he/she should recite mantra for 3,000 times for 7 days and the barren hill shall be covered by vegetations.

If one wishes to subdue wild animals, then he/she should burn some benzoin at the animals’ resting place and recites mantra for 1,000 times. Then the wild animals shall come to the door of the mantri as if livestock. They shall be willing to be deployed at will and they shall never leave the mantri.

If one wishes to subdue a Yaksa then he/she should get 10 pieces of peach twigs and trims them evenly. After that he/she should boil with the peach twigs with approximately 180 litres (一石) of water down to 90 litres (五斗). When this is done, the peach twigs shall be retrieved and 3 Taels of clove, 3 Taels of Frankincense (乳頭香) and 3 Taels of sarja-rasa (白膠香) are then mixes into the remaining 90 litres of willow water. The mixture is again boiled until 90 litres and then it is poured into broken bowl. Finally, the mantri should get a piece of peach twig measuring 3 feet and stir the mixture while reciting mantra for 100 times. At this point, all Yaksa and Raksa shall come and speak to the mantri. They will request that the mantri accept them as his/her servants.

If one wishes to destroy evil spirits, poisonous snakes, scorpions, wild and poisonous animals etc; he/she should get some clean ash and spread it around their caves. The animals shall come out automatically. The mantri should recite mantra softly for 100 times then the snakes, insects and animals shall not harm people. And that they shall quickly be liberated.

If one wishes to bind vicious dogs so that they will not harm people, then the mantri should recite mantra 7 times at food and then feed the dogs. The dogs shall never harm anyone again and also they shall not bark.

If one wishes to subdue thugs, then he/she can write his/her name and steps on the name while recites mantra for 100 times. After that the mantri should think of the person and he/she shall immediately come.

If one wishes to cause hatred between two parties, then he/she should write their names and steps onto the names while recites the mantra for 218 times. After that both of the parties shall hate each other. However, if one wishes to makeup both parties, then he/she should write their names and then steps onto their names while recite mantra for 108 times. Then both of the parties shall love each other and they shall never part.

If one is not feeling comfortable and happy and the mantri wishes to make him/her happy, then write the name of the person and steps on the name while recites mantra for 300 times.

One should always make great vows on behalf of others then I shall at the same time come and assist the mantri in wish granting and make him/her eloquence in debate according to the mantri’s wish. Whatever the mantri needs, I shall grant him/her all.

If there are mantri desire various precious mani jewels etc and he/she only needs to recite mantra according to his/her will, then I shall fulfil his/her wish accordingly.

If one wishes to cure illness, then he/she should make the ‘immediate sickness mudra’ (頓病印): first one’s left index and middle finger bent towards left palm. One should make the mudra and recites mantra 100 times and then uses the mudra to touch the patient 7 times. By doing so the patient shall immediately recover.

If a patient is dying, then one should use the ‘forbidden of 5 ways mudra’ (禁五路印) before treating the person. This is the ‘no death’ mudra. The mudra is same as previous mudra but with ring finger bent towards the centre of the palm while erecting small finger. One should make this mudra and recite mantra for 100 times and the patient shall recover.

If one wishes to cure spirit possession then he/she should burn benzoin beside the possessed person’s head and recite mantra and the spirits shall be removed.

If one is sick because of poisonous insect, then the mantri should write the patient’s name on a piece of paper and recites mantra. By doing so the patient shall recover.

This is the same as curing illnesses caused by spirits.

If one wishes to cure internal organ illnesses (伏連病), then he/she should write the person’s name and the name of spirits that cause the illnesses. After that, both names are buried under the bed of the patient’s bed and at the same time recite mantra. The spirit shall be obliged to appear. At this point, one can summon the spirit to look into matters of three times (三世) and the spirits will tell the truth. The patient shall recover.

If one suffers from seasonal illnesses (時氣病), he/she shall recover once the mantri has seen the person.

If one wishes to bar ghost king that causes illnesses to enter the protective boundary, then he/she should fast for 10 days and recites my mantra for 1,080 times. This shall be able to remove illnesses within a 10,000 miles radius.

T19n0983A Mahā-Mayūrī Pata Mandala Upacara (孔雀明王畫像壇場儀軌)

The Buddha-Vicana Mahā-Mayūrī-vidyā-rājñī Citra-paṭa mandala upacara
佛說大孔雀明王畫像壇場儀軌 

開府儀同三司特進試鴻臚卿肅國公食邑三千戶賜紫贈司空諡大鑒正號大廣智
大興善寺三藏沙門不空奉 詔譯

The Buddha said to Ananda (阿難陀): “If anyone in this world is suffered from disasters, war, famine, draught, epidemic, 404 types of illnesses, worries, disputes and discourses; and 84,000 types of spirits that trouble sentient beings. Also, if one wishes to request for worldly and heavenly wonderful wishes and he/she is facing with obstacles because of his greed and love ignorance. In addition to false (虛妄), bias (分別), three poisons, ignorance of truth, accumulation of bad karma. All of the above attract various disasters.

Ananda, this is the reason I shall recite this Buddha-matri Maha Mayuri Vidyarajani (佛母大孔雀明王經) for the benefits of those sentient beings tormented by disasters. Also I would speak of the method of drawing holy image and the rituals to setup a bodhi-manda (道場). If one follows this method to recite this sutra, then all disasters shall be averted and all wishes shall be fulfilled satisfactorily.

Ananda, if one is facing worries and disasters, or the king and princes, ministers, queen and concubines, also bhiksu (苾芻), bhiksuni (苾芻尼), virtuous men and women etc. for the purpose to avert disasters. Then either in a palace, a holy place, or in Buddhist temple (sajghārāma/伽藍) or in one’s house; one should dig a hole one elbow length depth according to the ritual. After removing roof tiles and rubbish, the hole should be filled with purified earth in a flat and square manner. If the original earth is clean, then it can be used to fill the hole, or if there are any surplus earth and the earth is indeed auspicious; then one should clean the place and build a 5 elbow lengths square mandala. Its height should be of 4 fingers measurement and the ‘pura’ (布位/town) should be 3 stories. Or one can also paint with colors or 5 color powders.

One should draw a 8 petal lotus in the inner court. In the center of the lotus, the image of Buddha-matri Maha Mayuri Vidyarajani Bodhisattva (佛母大孔雀明王菩薩) should be drawn. She is facing the east and she is white in color. Maha Mayuri is wearing white silk fabric light clothing and she is wearing a crown and ornamented with necklaces, ear rings, armlets and various ornaments. She is riding on a golden peacock king. She is sitting in lotus asana on a white lotus or on a green flower. Maha Mayuri has a compassionate expression with four arms: the first right hand is holding an opening lotus flower bulb, the second hand is holding a mātuluvga fruit (俱緣果); the shape of the fruit is similar to water mushroom (水苽). The first hand on her left is holding an auspicious fruit (吉祥菓) with the shape of peach or plums, the second hand is holding 3 to 5 pieces of peacock tail feathers. On the right side of Buddha-matri (佛母) in a clockwise direction, on the surrounding of the lotus petals; 7 tathagatahs (七佛世尊) should be drawn starting with Vipasi Tathagatah (微鉢尸如來) until Siddharta (微鉢尸如來) and Maitreya Bodhisattva (慈氏菩薩) etc. All of them are in meditation facing outwards.

On the Northwestern corner which is on the 8th petal, one should draw Maitreya Bodhisattva whose left hand is holding a kundika (軍持) and his right palm swing upwards making abhaya-dana (施無畏) gesture.

Also outside of the lotus petals, in the four directions of the inner court; 4 pratyeka-buddhas (辟支佛) in the shape of Buddha with uṣṇīṣa-śiraskatā (肉髻) on their heads should be drawn. Also at the four corners (四隅), four maha śrāvaka (聲聞) should be drawn: starting with the Northeastern corner, one should draw the Ananda, secondly in Southeastern corner Rahula (羅睺羅), then in Southwestern corner Sariputra (舍利弗), then in the Northwestern Mahāmaudgalyāyana (大目揵連) should be drawn. All of them are wearing cinta robes (揵陀袈裟) over the right shoulders. This is the middle court.

Secondly one should draw the retinues of the 8 deva-rajas in the second court.

In the east Indra Deva-raja (帝釋天王) holding vajra and surrounded by various devas. Secondly in the Southeastern direction, one should draw the Agini (火天) holding kunta in his left hand and his right hand is making the abhaya-dana gesture. Agni is surrounded by pañcābhijñā rsi (五通苦行仙). Thirdly, in the South Yamaraja (焰摩天王) holding Yama banner and he is surrounded by various spirits of the Yama realm. Then in the Southwestern side, one should draw Yaksaraja (羅剎王) holding machete and he is surrounded by raksas. After that on the West side one should draw Varuna (水天). He is holding noose (羂索) and surrounded by naga tribes. Then on the Northwestern direction, Vayuraja (風天王) holding banner and he is surrounded by various magicians. On the North is the Dhana-daraja (多聞天王) holding a precious wand and he is surrounded by Yaksa tribe. On the Northeast Isana (伊舍那天) holding trident and surrounded by various Bhuta ghosts (步多鬼).

All of the above are of second court.

The third court starting from the Northwestern corner, in clockwise direction; one should draw the 28 Maha Yaksa generals surrounded by various spirits. Also one should draw the celestial and planetary spirits of the 12 houses (及畫宿曜十二宮神). Then in the external of the third court, one should use incense paste to paint and decorate. Lotus leaves should be placed around the mandala and food offerings such as: milk, porridge, cheese, rice, fruits etc. should be placed on the leaves. All of the food offerings should be sprinkled with perfume that has been empowered with Aparamita Vidyaraja mantra.

And various offerings such as syrup, jaggery (石蜜), pomegranate (石榴), honey etc. should also be presented. One should also spread white flowers onto the mandala and one butter lamp (酥燈) should be put in each corner. Two clean bowls of scented water should be placed in front of each of the four doors. On the east side of the mandala one should put image of Buddha-matri Maha Mayuri Vidyarajani. One can follow the method of drawing idol as described in the drawing of mandala. Only that one need not set up mandala (界道) that is all about it.

The holy assembly in the center court should be worshipped with agarwood incense and other incenses. The devas in the eastern direction should be worshipped with Resina Liquidambaris (白膠香), devas in the southern direction should be worshipped with burning a mixture of Butea monosperma(Lam.)Taub (紫鑛), mustard seed and salt as incense. Devas in the western direction should be worshipped by burning a mixture of butter and benzoin. Devas in the northern direction should be worshipped with burning Boswellia thurifera (薰陸香).

The mantri should lay a grass matt (茅薦) in the west side of the mandala as his/her seat; or he/she can also sit on a short leg bed too. He/she should decorate his/her sutra table and put it in front of the mandala and then various flowers should be offered to the sutra. One should decorate as such and the number of people reciting sutra can be 3, 5 until 7 people. They should take turn in reciting sutra continuously day and night. The participant should refrain from talking except the one who is doing the preaching. The mantri commands (指撝) participants to answer to show that the participant is correct in his/her doing (祇對). Only the mantri can perform ritual and making mudras in invitation of pious and holy assembly (賢聖) while the rest of people should continue to recite sutra faithfully. The only requirement is that one should recite the sutra as many times as possible. All participants should sincerely and solemnly vow to repent and bow towards the 37 deities (三十七尊) in the dharma center for 1, 2, 3 until 7 days. Then all participants’ disasters shall be reduced or removed unless the person is not faithful enough. The one who recites sutra can be gṛha-stha (在家人) or converted (出家人). Whatever case that may be, he/she should take bath and clean his/her body everyday and new clean clothing should be changed.

At the beginning, everyone should present in front of the mandala faithfully prostrate to various holy assemblies. One should first make the mudra and recites mantra according to the teaching to summon all tathagatahs, bodhisattvas and also various devatas. Offerings should be made according to ritual prescription and then the person should say whatever his/her intention is earnestly so that he/she shall be empowered and protected. One should vow on behalf of all sentient beings and then seated in lotus posture and rub his/her hands with incense paste.

First, one should make the samaya mudra (三昧耶印): with both hands crossing each other forming a fist; the right hand on top of the left. Then both middle fingers are erected and touching other hence forming the mudra. After making the mudra, the mudra is placed at one’s heart level and then the samaya mantra (三昧耶真言) is recited 7 times:

Om samaya stvam

One should use this mudra to empower his/her four places: so-called: heart, forehead, throat and on top of one’s head. After that the mudra is released on top of one’s head.

Secondly, one should make the vajra hook bodhisattva mudra (金剛鉤菩薩印): as before with the samaya mudra, both index fingers bending as if hooks moving towards one’s body and recites mantra 7 times continuously. The mantra to summon various tathagatahs, bodhisattvas, devatas, spirits and all holy assemblies (普召諸佛菩薩諸天鬼神一切聖眾真言)

Om vajra angkush ahkar jahvikar karjah svaha

Due to this mudra and mantra, all holy assemblies shall not dare to transgress their oath and come as one summonses.

Secondly, one should make the Aparamita Vidyaraja Mudra (阿波羅爾多明王印). This mudra is used to perform earth boundary (結地界) and four directions and four corners protection (結方隅界). The mudra: both hands right pressing on the left crossing internally. Then the middle finger is erected and finger tips touching each other. One should immediately use this mudra to empower his/her head by turning the mudra clockwise three times. According to his/her wish that area around him/her or further away shall be protected. One should also recite mantra 7 times:

Om hulu hulu zanari matangi svaha

Then one should make the all-encompassing all holy assembly offering mudra (普供養一切賢聖印): both hands right on top of the left crossing each other in prayer position. All ten fingers cross with each at the upper section and thus forming the mudra. One should make the mudra at his/her heart level and recites mantra for 7 times; and the mudra is finally released on top of one’s head. The mantra:

Namah samantah buddhonam sarva thakam wunabhiti sapaya rasiham gaganajim svaha

By making this mudra and reciting the mantra, one shall be able to accomplish all vast offering to all tathagatahs, bodhsattvas and holy assemblies; and uncountable numbers of Buddha lands.

Then one should make the Buddha-matri Maha Mayuri Vidyarajani Mudra (佛母大孔雀明王印): Both hand fingers right pressing on left crossing each other inwards, both thumbs and small fingers erected with finger tips touching. This is the mudra. One should hold the mudra at one’s heart level and recites mantra 7 times. As before one should use the mudra to empower 4 places and then releases the mudra on top of his/her head. The mantra:

Om mayangra kranti svaha

Secondly one should hold the incense burner as offering during supplication: one should tell the holy assembly what he/she wishes. As such according to the method one performs the conjuration and offerings. And then he/she should give rise to compassion heart for removing sufferings of sentient beings that the person switches to recite this sutra. One should change various offering stuffs everyday and that he should make the Aparamita Vidyaraja mudra and recites the mantra. Then he/she should use this mudra to rotate counter-clockwise direction once. This is to temporarily removing boundary protection to exchange offering substances. After that the person should perform boundary protection as before as such perform offerings and recites this sutra. Then all disasters, draught, epidemic, spirits, curses, hindrances and various hardships shall be removed. All wishes shall be granted.

I have completed spoken of this method of drawing mandala and offering sadhana in general. If one does not construct this panted mandala and that quick disaster is nearing, then he/she can according to his/her ability and go to a clean place and uses cow dung to paint an elbow length square mandala of any size. Then he/she should grind white sandalwood to paint a round mandala with Buddha images in 9 places and also one should erect 3 to 5 pieces of peacock tail feathers in the centre of the mandala. One should burn incense and spread flowers onto the mandala. And also uses milk, porridge and cheese etc. as offerings to the holy assembly. One only needs to recite this sutra one heartedly once, thrice until seven times; for one day or two days; then all dangers and disasters shall be removed, all wishes shall be fulfilled.”

At this time, Ananda heard the Buddha for the benefit of future suffering sentient beings said and recite this Maha Mayuri Vidyarajani Sutra Upacara, he prostrated to the Buddha and retreated.
